‘He’s a bit awkward’ – Spurs legend warns club away from reported target

Tottenham Hotspur legend Graham Roberts has warned the North London club against signing reported target Houssem Aouar from Lyon.

Roberts claimed that ‘he wouldn’t touch him’ because the midfielder is a ‘bit awkward’.

Sky Sports reported that Aouar is a target for Spurs this summer, also revealing that ‘informal’ talks have already taken place between the two parties.

The midfielder’s preference is to play Champions League football which is something Spurs cannot offer, although neither can Lyon who are only in the Europa League this season.

The 23-year-old’s contract with the French club expires in 2023, and he reportedly wants to weigh up his choices before making a decision.

Since rising through the academy, Aouar has gone to make 174 appearances in all competitions for Lyon, contributing 64 goals which is an impressive total given his young age (Transfermarkt).

Despite this, Roberts has stated that Spurs should not sign the midfielder: ‘We signed Ndombele, and we signed Aurier and there looks like there’s a bit of a mafia, and I don’t like that.

“They say he’s a bit awkward, so I wouldn’t touch him, not for me.

“I would look at somebody a bit closer to home and go down that route.”

For me, I see absolutely no reason why we should not sign Aouar. If anything, I think we’d be lucky to get him given the fact we don’t have Champions League.

He would add a new dimension to our midfield as well as contributing to goals and assists. A player we should be looking to get over the line before clubs with bigger pulling power come.
