‘He’s a competitor’ – Lloris gives his initial impressions of Richarlison at Spurs

Hugo Lloris has lavished praise on Richarlison and backed the Brazilian to go from strength to strength after scoring his first goals for Tottenham on Wednesday.

Richarlison kept his place in Tottenham’s starting eleven for the club’s Champions League season-opener against Marseille on the back of his impressive performance against Fulham over the weekend.

The Brazilian was once again Spurs’ best player on the night and scored both of the home side’s goals in the 2-0 win.

The former Everton man has delivered whenever he has been called upon by Antonio Conte so far this season and Lloris revealed that the forward has settled in well at the club since arriving in the summer.

When asked about Richarlison, the Tottenham captain told Football.London: “Honestly, we discover a new player.

“We used to face him and when you face an opponent you have no idea who they are really. I think he settled very well into the team and as you can see he’s finding his place. That’s good because we need everyone ready for competition.”

Lloris insisted that the 25-year-old fully deserves his goals for the effort he has been putting in since making the move to Tottenham.

The Frenchman revealed that the Brazil international is a fierce competitor, who always gives his all, whether in training or during matches.

Lloris added: “I think he deserves these goals. They’re very important for him but also for the team.

“I think he’s making a lot of effort every day in training, every time he has the opportunity in a game and today he scored two great headers. Obviously, he made the game easy for us.

“He’s a competitor. You just have to see him in training sessions or every game that we play, he’s always there to compete. To put the defenders under stress and pressure. That’s why he was rewarded today for all his work. And for sure a lot is coming for him.”

Despite all the negative press that Richarlison receives for some of his antics, it is clear that he has managed to quickly gain the respect of all of his teammates at Tottenham. If the 25-year-old maintains his current form, Conte will not be able to leave him out of the side.
