‘He’s always positive’ – Conte reacts to Ben Davies’ new Tottenham contract

Antonio Conte has said that Ben Davies fully deserved a new contact and labelled his displays last season as ‘outstanding’.

After struggling to get a look-in under Nuno Espirito Santo for the first few months of last season, Davies has been a mainstay in Tottenham’s backline after Conte arrived through the door in November, starting 34 of 36 matches since the Italian’s arrival.

The Welshman thrived in the left-centre-back role in Conte’s back three and arguably had his most consistent season in a Spurs shirt.

The North London club announced last week that the 29-year-old had put pen to paper on a new contract that runs until 2025.

Davies admitted to the club’s official website that he is delighted his journey at the club is set to continue as he embarks on his ninth season at Tottenham.

Conte praised the defender’s characteristics both on and off the pitch and insisted that it was vital to tie down his future.

When asked about Davies’ contract, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “Yeah first of all Ben Davies deserved to sign a new contract because last season he played in an outstanding way and he’s a really good guy.

“He’s always positive and to have a player like him in your starting XI or on the bench at this level I think is important.”

The competition for places with Clement Lenglet might bring out the best of Davies during the upcoming campaign. I would not be surprised if the Welshman continues to be a mainstay of Conte’s backline over the course of the season.
