‘He’s got everything’ – Pundit praises 24-year-old despite loss against Sporting Lisbon

Despite Tottenham having fallen to a 2-0 loss at Sporting yesterday, Owen Hargreaves lavished praise on Cristian Romero for his display.

Romero has taken to the Premier League like duck to water since arriving at Tottenham from Atalanta last summer.

He has made the right centre-back position in Antonio Conte’s back three his own and it did not come as a surprise when the north London club activated the £46.5m option to buy the Argentine on a permanent bais last month.

Most Spurs fans will view the fee as a bargain, given the impressive first season that the 24-year-old has had during his time at the club.

The former Atalanta man’s importance was certainly underlined when he missed the clashes against Wolves, Nottingham Forest and West Ham a few weeks ago due to injury, with the Lilywhites having trouble playing out the ball from the defence in his absence.

Hargreaves suggested that it is not just Romero’s aggression and defensive nous that makes him such a fantastic player but also the centre-back’s passing range.

The ex-Manchester United midfielder who was on co-commentary duty alongside Ian Darke told BT Sport 3 (broadcast on 13/9; 18:20): “Romero, such a fantastic player. He has the potential to be one of the best in the whole league. He’s got everything, he’s aggressive. Good passer of the ball.”

Romero was not at his best against Sporting but even so, he was far from poor. His choice of passes is certainly an underrated aspect of the Argentine’s game. There is no doubt that the 24-year-old has the capability of evolving into one of the best central defenders in the world.
