‘He’s phenomenal’ – Jose Mourinho reacts to another impressive performance by midfielder

There are few positives to take for Spurs from last night’s game against RB Leipzig, as they not only lost 1-0 but also gave the opposition an away goal.

Spurs were pinned back from the first minute, as Leipzig came close to scoring a few times in the opening moments.

The pattern remained this way for the vast majority of the first half, although the sides went into the break at 0-0.

While Spurs improved in the second 45, they did go 1-0 down as Ben Davies gave away a silly penalty, with Timo Werner converting coolly from the spot.

After the goal went in and Mourinho made a couple of substitutes, bringing on Ndombele and Lamela, Spurs came alive in attack.

Giovani Lo Celso pulled the strings and was the architect of a strong final half an hour from the home side, even hitting the post himself.

Mourinho couldn’t say enough about the Argentine after the match (Football London): “I think he played fantastic. He played in the middle, got a yellow card which is a huge limitation for a player against a fast side. Then he comes to the right side and he was phenomenal with the ball and without it.

“You can see by my options that he wasn’t the first option for me when I arrived. He was barely coming from the bench. Very quiet boy. He’s more about work than speaking. Step by step I think he’s phenomenal. Against Villa was the same, he was injured, on the bench and comes on for the last half an hour, he’s playing, really, really well.”
