‘He’s really focused’ – Conte praises unsung player for performances in new role

Antonio Conte has praised Ben Davies for his recent displays as part of a three-man cental defence at Tottenham after the side’s 3-0 win over Norwich City.

The Canaries were brushed aside at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, with goals from Lucas Moura, Davinson Sanchez and Heung-min Son powering Spurs to a much-needed three points.

The win sees Conte’s men record their third Premier League win in a row and second clean sheet on the bounce, following up Thursday’s 2-0 win over Brentford.

The Italian named a largely unchanged side from the side that started in midweek with Emerson Royal the only casualty after dropping out with illness.

As such, Wales international Davies continued with his place on the left side of the back three next to Eric Dier and Sergio Reguilon at wing-back.

The 28-year-old produced yet another assured display in his new role for the club, flicking on a Son corner for Sanchez to prod home as well as providing the assist for South Korean’s tally.

Conte believes Davies has adapted well to his position in the Spurs back line and was full of praise for the Welshman after the encounter.

He said (via Football.London): “Ben [Davies] is playing very well and I think that role specifically I can get out the best of him. It happens the same with Azpilicueta. On the three central defenders it’s important to be good defensively but it’s important to play with the football.

“When you find a team that is defending low and also to play, it’s very important in this system. I need a player who has that personality and ability.

“We are talking a really good person, a really good guy. He’s really focused and he’s playing very well.”

Davies has been one of the players that has been playing excellently under Conte and he appears to be thriving in his new role. He has played there plenty of times on international duty with Wales, so Conte has clearly seen he is capable of doing a solid job there, which he has done so far.
