‘He’s very aware’ – Alasdair Gold on Conte’s understanding about January funds

Alasdair Gold has revealed that Antonio Conte does not expect to have a huge transfer war chest during the January transfer window.

Since Conte’s appointment two weeks ago, there has been plenty of speculation regarding the players that the Italian will look to bring to Tottenham in January.

Sources from Italy have indicated that Spurs had agreed to give the 52-year-old a significant transfer budget of more than €100m (£84.6m) in a ‘short time’ while The Sun have claimed that the new Tottenham boss has also been promised a war chest of £150m.

Calciomercato.it even asserted that Conte has specifically named several Serie A stars including Inter Milan duo Marcelo Brozovic and Stefan de Vrij, as well as AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli, as players he wanted Tottenham to bring in.

These claims have been contradicted by other sources like The Telegraph and The Daily Mail who have suggested that Spurs will have to sell a few players to raise the funds necessary to pursue Conte’s targets.

Gold has now suggested something similar, insisting that Conte is well aware of Tottenham’s limitations in the upcoming transfer windows.

The journalist said on his YouTube channel (starting at 23:50): “I was told last week that they haven’t actually discussed transfers yet with Conte at the club.

“I’m sure there would have been some talk of ideas and what they would like and finances, but I’m led to believe that he’s very aware of the situation at Tottenham.

“I don’t think there’s huge amounts of money to throw around in January, and there may have to be a sale or two to facilitate that.

“I would love to be a fly on the wall in those meetings. I am told that he’s well aware of exactly what the limitations are at Tottenham and what can and can’t be done in these upcoming transfer windows.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Common sense would suggest that Conte would want to analyse the squad closely before deciding on the transfer targets with Paratici.

While the new Spurs boss would have probably discussed specific names with the Tottenham managing director, how different players in the squad perform over the next month and a half will likely have a huge bearing on who we go for in January.
