Heung-min Son cracks Harry Kane joke when asked about his Spurs penalty

Son Heung-min has joked about calling Harry Kane back to take the penalty after putting his spot-kick away against Newcastle United.

Ange Postecoglou decided to revert Son to his usual left-wing birth against Newcastle United, with Richarlison starting as the number nine.

The South Korean was a lot more involved in the game than he has been over recent weeks and had plenty of joy on the flank, with Kieran Trippier struggling to cope with his pace and skill.

The Tottenham captain created both of the home side’s first-half goals with some enterprising play down the left and he had a chance to get on the scoresheet himself when he was brought down by Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka in the box.

Heung-min Son is Tottenham’s new penalty king

It was the first penalty Spurs have been awarded since Harry Kane’s departure and Tottenham fans have got so accustomed to seeing their former striker dispatch spot-kicks with authority over the best part of the last decade.

Much like the England captain, Son was also ice cool, dispatching it with power into the bottom corner, and the 31-year-old admitted after the game that he has learned a lot by watching Kane take penalties.

When asked about stepping up for the penalty, the forward told Sky Sports: “Shall we call Harry [Kane] back? (Laughs). I practised all the time, even when Harry was here. And I learned a lot from him.”

Son is not just a world-class ball striker but is generally very calm and composed in front of goal, given the experience he has under his belt. So, there has never been any doubt about his ability from the spot.
