Heung-min Son earns ‘respect’ of former Liverpool star for recent public comments

Former footballer turned pundit Jose Enrique has praised Heung-min Son for publicly turning down a big-money move to Saudi Arabia.

After a phenomenal season in the 2021/22 campaign, where Heung-min Son won the Premier League Golden Boot award, many expected big things from the South Korean last season.

Things did not go to plan for Son, however, or Spurs for that matter. Tottenham finished eighth in the Premier League and the 30-year-old struggled for form all year.

Despite this, Son is expected to be a key figure for Spurs next season and will likely be an important member of Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

It came as a surprise, then, when ESPN broke news of Saudi Arabia outfit Al-Ittihad preparing an offer of €60 million plus bonuses (£51.26 million) for the Spurs star. They were reportedly ready to offer Son a four-year contract worth €30 million per year.

Son himself was quick to put this talk to bed. Journalist Sungmo Lee reported from a press conference where Son insisted he wanted to keep playing for Tottenham because money was not important to him right now.

Son earns respect for turning down Saudi Arabia

The manner in which Son shot down these rumours was admirable, and it’s a move that has attracted praise from Jose Enrique.

In response to Son’s comments, Enrique tweeted: “I respect whoever wants to go to Saudi Arabia to get an incredible contract, but respect as well for Son here.”

It must be incredibly difficult for players to turn down that kind of contract from the Saudi league, but surely playing football at the top level and having some integrity is more important than money.

Players earn huge salaries already, they don’t need to be chasing even bigger deals within a morally questionable league.
