Heung-min Son opens up on bittersweet emotions after awards win

Son Heung-min has admitted his disappointment at not being able to enjoy a moment with the fans after performing a clean sweep of Tottenham’s end-of-season supporter awards.

Apart from winning the One Hotspur Player of the Season, One Hotspur Juniors’ Player of the Season, and Official Supporters’ Clubs’ Player of the Season awards, he also took home the Goal of the Season prize for his brilliant solo effort against Burnley back in December.

While the South Korean revealed his delight at picking up the prizes, he admitted that he would have liked to share the moment with Spurs fans, after missing the end of last season due to a suspension.

Son is quoted by Football.London as saying: “It means a lot to me. Of course, it’s sad not seeing the fans.

“Last year, I won it but I wasn’t playing the [final home] game and today I was playing but the fans weren’t here so it was a bit sad.

“It’s a big honour and a big achievement for me. I’m grateful for every player, every member of staff and every fan.”

Despite the difficult season endured by the club, the 28-year-old has registered his best goal return in the league since arriving at Spurs (transfermakt.com).

When asked if he was getting better every year in the Premier League, the forward responded: “I try to be. I can’t say yes because I’m not sure. I just try my best every game.

“I’ve been here almost five years and I try to enjoy every single moment. I’m working hard and I try to improve every single day. This is important. It’s hard sometime sometimes to perform amazingly but the important thing is to improve every day.

“This is what I try to do. My teammates help me so this is the reason [for my success].”

I have been impressed with the improvement in Son’s game off the ball since Jose has arrived at the club. The forward is now much smarter in terms of defending spaces and closing people down. He is also showing much more aggression and tenacity than he used to in helping to win the ball back. The counter-attacking system we employ at the moment might actually end up getting the best out of Son.
