Heung-min Son seemingly disagrees with Postecoglou’s opinion on Spurs set-pieces

Son Heung-min acknowledged that Tottenham’s set-piece defending was not up to the required standard against Arsenal and admitted that it was always going to be difficult to come back after the errors that they committed in the first half.

The North London Derby was an extremely frustrating watch for everyone associated with Spurs, partly because there was not too much wrong about the home side’s general play.

Even though Ange Postecoglou’s men were coming up against the league leaders, they more than held their own for much of the game and dictated proceedings.

However, lapses in concentration at the back once again cost the Lilywhites, who conceded twice from corner kicks in the first half, including a Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg own goal.

While Spurs did battle back to score twice in the second half, the game very much felt like a wasted opportunity for the home side and showed that they still lack that killer instinct needed to compete with the best sides in the division.

Heung-min Son says Spurs need to work on set-pieces

Son bemoaned the kind of goals that Tottenham conceded and admitted that set-pieces are an area that the team need to work on.

This comes after Postecoglou himself dismissed the need to concentrate heavily on set pieces as he would rather put his time into developing a style of play first (FootballLondon).

The Spurs captain told BBC Sport after the 3-2 loss: “Especially in those games, if you concede goals like that it is difficult and painful. They were clinical and strong in the air. We had a lot of opportunities, hitting the post and having a disallowed goal. As I said before, when you concede goals like this you have to be strong.

“As I said before, it was a big game and we had to be strong on set pieces. Obviously, they are good but I think everyone has to step up. Now we have to work on set pieces, stay strong and go again.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While our issues in defending set prices are plain for all to see, unfortunately, Ange seems to be getting defensive whenever asked about it and appears adamant that it is not one of the side’s main weaknesses.

Hopefully, he is just toeing that line publicly not to point the finger at Mile Jedinak and his message on that matter is different internally.
