Thursday night presents a season-defining moment for Tottenham Hotspur, who must overcome a one-goal deficit against AZ Alkmaar and Heung-min Son has sent a rallying cry to all involved.
Tottenham’s performances of late have left plenty to be desired. Against Bournemouth on Sunday, they were second-best in every department—conceding 17 shots, eight of which were on target, while allowing five big chances and an xG of 2.20.
A similar story played out in the Netherlands last week, where Spurs never got going. They registered just one shot on target, and that came in the 87th minute.
If they are to advance to the next round in the Europa League, a significant improvement on Thursday night is non-negotiable.

Quality alone does not win games – Heung-min Son
With the second leg set for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Heung-min Son has made it clear what he expects from his teammates.
The Spurs captain emphasised mentality and commitment as the key ingredients for a turnaround.
Speaking to the club’s official website, Son said: “On Thursday, it is another big game at home. We need everyone, from the supporters, players, staff, the Club. Everybody. We need that to get the game turned around,
“Quality (alone) does not bring the wins. The games always need the (right) mentality and care. The performance and the hard work always matter.
“Individual quality… you do not have to talk about it. When you are not giving everything, football is the sport where it can turn around. We need to be focused, take it seriously, respect the opponents and do everything that we can to turn it around, especially at home.”
Tottenham’s season is on the line this Thursday
The pressure is on Tottenham to deliver on Thursday, as anything less than a victory would all but end their season. The 24/25 campaign has been underwhelming, and both the players and the club have faced widespread criticism.
Progressing in this competition offers them a chance to silence the doubters and salvage something from an otherwise disappointing year. It is safe to say that a victory is the only acceptable outcome this Thursday.
