Heung-min Son wrote to Spurs teammate before WC to check on his fitness

Heung-min Son is one of the nice guys in football, and his latest comments to TNT Sports reveal he wrote to Tottenham Hotspur teammate Cristian Romero ahead of the World Cup to check on his friend’s fitness levels going into the tournament.

Romero arrived at Tottenham last summer and has made a huge impact on the field, quickly establishing himself as one of the most highly-rated defenders in the Premier League. He has made 43 appearances for Spurs (Transfermarkt) but has been held back by injury this season.

The Argentina star has managed just 13 appearances this term, missing the last five games before the domestic season paused for the World Cup (Transfermarkt).

The combative centre-back was struggling with a hamstring injury, and it was touch and go as to whether he would be fit in time to make it into the squad for Argentina’s World Cup campaign (AS).

The 24-year-old recovered in time to start the opening group game against Saudi Arabia, which his side ultimately lost 2-1. It was a game which saw Romero come in for a fair bit of criticism, with AS Argentina even calling for him to be dropped from the national side, which he eventually was.

Heung-min Son is another Spurs player who was a doubt for the World Cup, after fracturing his eye on Champions League duty. The South Korea star made it in the end though, with the help of a protective mask.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Son explained how he communicated with Romero in the build-up to the tournament to check how he was doing.

Son said: “I wrote to Cuti [Romero] to ask him if he was okay. Before the tournament, he was injured. He is one of my best friends.”

Sonny is just the sweetest person ever, isn’t he? You can tell he genuinely cares about his teammates on a personal level, and it seems as though everyone on the team is his best friend. I’m so happy that both he and Cuti recovered in time for the World Cup.
