Heurelho Gomes urges Spurs to appoint manager he thinks employs ‘same style’ as Pochettino

Heurelho Gomes has urged Tottenham to appoint Luis Enrique, stating that the Spaniard can get the club to play the kind of football they did during the Mauricio Pochettino era.

If reports over the last week are to be believed, Julian Nagelsmann is now Tottenham’s top target, with The Independent reporting recently that Daniel Levy will make his best effort to persuade the German to take over.

The report added that should the 35-year-old turn down the offer, the club would turn their attention to Feyenoord head coach Arne Slot.

Fabrizio Romano revealed on the most recent episode of the Here We Go Podcast that apart from the two aforementioned candidates, Enrique and Vincent Kompany are also in contention for the job.

It had previously been reported by 90 min on April 18 that Tottenham had held ‘positive discussions’ with Enrique’s representatives.

Gomes believes that the former Barcelona man is the right coach to help Spurs return to their ethos of playing attacking football.

When asked who the club should appoint as their next manager, the former Tottenham goalkeeper told Soccer AM on Sky Sports (29/04/23): “Luis Enrique. I think he can fit. The way he plays.

“Also, the style of play of Spurs. Tottenham change a lot. I am a big fan of Pochettino because I think he transformed Spurs.

“I think it’s pretty much the same style of play. They need to bring it back to Spurs again.”

The one thing to note about all four of the above candidates (Nagelsmann, Enrique, Slot and Kompany) is that all of them favour possession-based, high-pressing football.

So, the club are clearly aware of the need to return to their original ethos after the failed experiments with Mourinho and Conte.
