Hoddle admits Spurs need Lloris replacement and suggests ex-Man Utd player

Glenn Hoddle has suggested that Tottenham should look to move for West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris.

Lloris has come under a lot of criticism on the back of his performances in the 5-4 defeat to Everton last week and the 3-0 loss to Manchester City.

The Tottenham number one has made some uncharacteristic errors over the last few weeks and there have been calls from pundits for the 34-year-old to be dropped in favour of Joe Hart.

Jose Mourinho came to Frenchman’s defence during his press conference yesterday afternoon, pointing out that a few mistakes do not suddenly make a top player a bad one.

However, Hoddle believes that the Tottenham captain is lacking in confidence and that the North Londoners should look to replace him sooner rather than later.

He identified Johnstone as the ideal replacement for Lloris and suggested that the Baggies number one will improve in the coming years.

The legendary Spurs midfielder said on The Glenn Hoddle Show: “I’m not sure Spurs could drop him, I don’t think Joe Hart is ready to play back-to-back games.

“He hasn’t been safe for four or five months. Spurs, long-term, will need to replace Lloris – quite soon. He is on the back foot.

“He looks as if he’s doubting himself. Sam Johnstone at West Brom is a top goalkeeper, he will get better and better.

“If West Brom go down or stay up, he is somebody who will stay in the Premier League – and someone will grab him.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Johnstone would be a decent acquisition if we are looking at him as a potential number two as the West Brom goalkeeper would be an upgrade on Joe Hart. However, I still think it is way too early to be thinking about replacing Lloris. He was one of our most consistent performers this season until a couple of weeks ago.
