Hojbjerg issues rallying cry to Spurs teammates to step up amid injuries and suspensions

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg says everyone at Tottenham needs to step up and be prepared to fight over the next few weeks since the Lilywhites will be without several key players.

James Maddison and Micky van de Ven both came off with injuries in the first half against Chelsea, with Ange Postecoglou admitting that the centre-back’s injury seemed ‘significant’ (Football.London).

In addition, the Lilywhites will have to cope without Cristian Romero for their next three games after his red card while Destiny Udogie is also suspended for the clash against Wolves on Sunday after picking up two yellows against the Blues.

Meanwhile, Richarlison also admitted to ESPN Brazil after the game that he will have surgery on his pubis, having had discomfort for many months.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg sends rallying cry to Spurs

Hojbjerg was part of the Tottenham side that delivered a battling display in the second half against Chelsea despite all odds.

When asked to sum up the night, the Dane told The Standard: ”I was in the battle, so it’s easier for you guys to have a clear vision.

”Listen, I think we went down with the flag held high. We gave it our all. We showed what we had in our hearts but the result hurts a lot.”

The midfielder admitted that his teammates have to dust themselves down and deliver over the next few weeks to make up for the absence of key men.

The 28-year-old added: ”[Tuesday] we have a day off, and when we see each other on Wednesday we’ll gather the pieces and the focus and concentrate on the next game.

”Everyone has to show their availability and show they are prepared to do what it takes. The result hurts a lot, but we have to keep going.”

That second-half performance showed the kind of character and mentality that runs through the Tottenham squad.

There is no doubt that the likes of Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie and Maddison will be big misses but I am fascinated to see whether some of the squad players will step up and make a statement.
