Hojbjerg opens up on first season at Spurs and added responsibility

Pierre Emile Hojbjerg believes that Tottenham can still make up lost ground on the top four despite their recent struggles in the Premier League.

Hojbjerg has been one of the few bright sparks of what has been a season to forget for Tottenham on the whole.

The Dane, who arrived for a modest £15m fee from Southampton last summer, has become a pivotal player for the North Londoners, impressing with his ability to sense danger and mop up in front of the back four.

Hojbjerg admitted that he is happy with the evolution he has made as a player since arriving at Spurs.

He told Ekstra Bladet (as relayed by Sport Witness): “I am happy with and satisfied with the role I have, and I always feel ready to fill it out. Things feel right.

“I’ve gotten older, more experienced and I feel sharper in terms of what I can give to the team. Not only in terms of play, but also on a human level.”

The 25-year-old believes he has grown with the additional responsibility given to him by Jose Mourinho as well as his national team boss Kasper Hjulmand.

He added: “I switched to a bigger club, where I have grown with the task. I also transfer that to the national team, to a possible extent. I am who I am – and I am both in the club and on the national team.”

There seems to be plenty of doom and gloom surrounding Spurs at the minute, with reports indicating that the dressing room is split regarding Mourinho.

Hojbjerg certainly seems to retain faith in the Tottenham boss, insisting that the Lilywhites can still finish the season strongly.

If you compare with December, when we were at the forefront of everything, it looks different, but I don’t want to pain hell on the wall”, the midfielder said.

“We are in the final of the League Cup and top four isn’t impossible. We have eight final lefts.

“It has been a year with many fights, many travels. We may have suffered a little from that. There have been some crucial moments where we have paid the price for it.

“If you are not prepared to fight for every metre or ball, you will be punished. That’s the great thing about the Premier League.”

While a six-point gap is certainly not impossible to overcome, the problems is that there seem to be five or six teams competing for just two spots. It is difficult to see all of those teams struggling in the final run in which is why we will have to win 6 or 7 of our remaining 8 matches to have a realistic chance of finishing in the top four.
