‘Hope nothing serious’ – Antonio Conte on potential injury sustained against Everton

Antonio Conte has expressed his frustration at Ryan Sessegnon seemingly breaking down every time he shows signs of improvement and admitted that he is hopeful that the 21-year-old’s problem is not serious.

Sessegnon kept his place in the starting eleven for Tottenham’s clash against Everton and created the first goal, showing his pace on the overlap to get in-behind Seamus Coleman and producing a dangerous cross that was turned into his own net by Michael Keane.

The youngster went down injured towards the end of the first half, with Sergio Reguilon replacing him at half-time.

The Spaniard made an instant impact, finding the back of the net less than a minute into the second half after getting on the end of Dejan Kulusevski’s pass.

Speaking after the game, Conte revealed that Sessegnon’s problem is muscular and that the club will make an evaluation of the England Under-21 international on Tuesday.

When asked about Sessegnon’s injury in the post-match press conference, the Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “Ryan Sessegnon we have to make an evaluation tomorrow. I hope nothing serious as it is a muscular problem.

“I hope nothing serious because every time this player is having continuity of performance and then something wrong or little injury. I hope is nothing serious.”

Conte also praised Reguilon for his second-half showing after coming on at the interval.

He said about the 25-year-old: “I was happy for Sergio Reguilon because after Covid he came in and scored. He’s another player who has a lot of space for improvement and my expectation is that he improves his level.”

Sessegnon’s habit of regularly breaking down has been a huge concern since he arrived at Spurs two and a half years ago.

It seemed like the youngster had turned a corner fitness wise during his loan spell at Hoffenheim last season but the early signs are that his body is not quite able to cope with the intensity of Conte’s set-up.

Hopefully, his issue is not serious and he makes a quick recovery. If the 21-year-old is ruled out of action for several weeks, then I would expect the club to consider cashing in on him in the summer.
