Ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Carabao Cup third-round trip to Liverpool on Tuesday, let’s have a look at their daunting record at Anfield and the task awaiting Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
After an unbeaten pre season campaign, Roberto De Zerbi‘s side have made a disappointing start to the new Premier League season and remain without a win after four games.
Tottenham’s goalless draw against Everton at the weekend also made unwanted history, as it was the first time in the club’s history that they had failed to score in each of their opening four Premier League matches.
The only goals Spurs have managed all season came in the second round of the Carabao Cup, when they put five past Charlton Athletic last month.
Scoring goals is therefore the biggest problem De Zerbi needs to solve, and it could become an even bigger concern on Tuesday. Liverpool await in the third round of the Carabao Cup, and Tottenham’s record at Anfield makes for grim reading.
Tottenham Hotspur have not won at Anfield in 15 years
There was not exactly a wave of optimism among Tottenham supporters when they learned that Liverpool were waiting for them in the third round of the Carabao Cup, and the draw was made even less appealing by the fact that Spurs will have to travel to Anfield.
That is because the last time Tottenham won there was back in May 2011, when Harry Redknapp’s side came away with a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Rafael Van der Vaart and a 25-year-old Luka Modric.
It was more than 15 years ago, and six different managers have since taken charge of Spurs in matches at Anfield, yet none have been able to leave with a victory.
And if you look at the wider history, Tottenham have played Liverpool away 94 times since the first recorded meeting 116 years ago in 1910, they have won just 8 of those matches, while losing 60 and drawing 26. (transfermarkt)
The resulting goal difference stands at -104, which is the worst goal difference Spurs have at any stadium they have visited in their history, while their 8.5 per cent win rate there is also the lowest they have at any current Premier League away ground.
Manchester United’s Old Trafford is next on that list, but there is a sizeable gap between the two, with Tottenham’s win percentage there standing at 17.2 per cent.

There could, however, finally be a reason for De Zerbi’s Tottenham to believe that the 15 year wait can come to an end. Liverpool are themselves going through a period of transition under new manager Andoni Iraola.
This will be the first time De Zerbi and Iraola face each other since taking charge of their new clubs, although they have already met twice before during their spells with Brighton and Bournemouth respectively. De Zerbi won once and Iraola once.
This time, then, Liverpool may not have quite the same advantage they have enjoyed over Tottenham for so long.
