How Spurs could help Arsenal land World Cup winner with £460m release clause

A potential Tottenham transfer decision could have a bearing on whether Arsenal manage to land one of their prime targets this summer.

Jan Vertonghen’s contract with Tottenham runs out next month and Football Insider have reported that the defender has rejected a one-year extension offered by Spurs as he wanted a two-year deal.

The report claimed that Tottenham do not expect the experienced centre-half to still be at the club next season.

Meanwhile, Sport asserts that Vertonghen is among the names on Barcelona’s radar this summer, with the Spanish giants always said to have held a liking towards the experienced defender.

The Catalans might be looking at the Spurs defender as a replacement for Samuel Umtiti as AS have reported that Quique Setien’s side want to cash in on the French international this summer.

The report also reveals that Arsenal have inquired about the 26-year-old, who has not only won multiple league titles at Barcelona but was also a world champion with France in 2018. AS also report that Umtiti currently has a staggering release clause of £460m.

So, if Spurs do push Vertonghen out and he ends up moving to Barcelona, it is conceivable that the Lilywhites might inadvertently help their North London rivals land Umtiti.

Spurs Web Opinion

To be perfectly honest, I don’t particularly mind if Umtiti joins Arsenal. While he is a great defender on his day, his fitness issues have put some major question marks over his ability to play every week. I personally want to see Vertonghen staying for at least another year but I wouldn’t be surprised if he had already played his final game for us.
