How the Europa League draw could reunite Tottenham and Jose Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for a Europa League campaign for the first time in a few years, and will be fancying their chances of lifting the trophy. But, if they are to go all the way, they may have to get past a number of top clubs, including Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce.

Four new teams enter the Europa League draw

The draw for the 2024/25 Europa League takes place on August 30 and Spurs find themselves in Pot 1, but that doesn’t mean they won’t end up facing some incredibly tough teams.

Already in the draw are Olympiacos, Athletic Bilbao, Real Sociedad, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hoffenheim, Roma, Lazio, Nice, Lyon, AZ Alkmaar, and Porto. Manchester United are also involved, though cannot play another Premier League team in the early stages of the competition.

Thanks to Champions League qualifiers, we now know four more teams who will be entering the Europa League, after missing out on Europe’s top club competition. Rangers, Mourinho‘s Fenerbahce, FC Twente, and Union Saint-Gilloise all lost their third-round qualifiers and will now potentially come up against Spurs.

What’s next for the Europa League?

Seven more teams will drop into the Europa League as a result of losing Champions League qualifiers in the next two weeks.

Upcoming games will see Young Boys vs Galatasaray, Dinamo Zagreb vs Qarabag, Midtjylland vs Slovan Bratislava, Bodo/Glimt vs Red Star Belgrade, Malmo vs Sparta Prague, Lille vs Slavia Prague, and Dynamo Kiev vs Red Bull Salzburg.

Another 12 teams will join the competition via Europa League qualifiers, giving us the 36 teams that will comprise the new league format.

Big teams like Ajax, Braga, Anderlecht, and Hearts are all involved in Europa League qualifiers over the next fortnight.

Spurs Web Opinion

It would be great to take on Jose and hopefully make him rue his recent comments badmouthing Spurs.

No matter what happens, we have to go all out to win the Europa League anyway, and we’ll have to play some great teams along the way.
