How Tottenham feel about Savinho amid rumours of new Manchester City contract

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has provided an update on the future of Savinho as Tottenham Hotspur continue to plot a raid on Manchester City for the winger.

In some ways, Tottenham Hotspur’s failure to get a deal for the Brazilian over the line in the summer feels like a massive missed opportunity.

It was widely reported that Savinho was keen on joining Spurs in the summer, but the Lilywhites were unable to convince Man City to come to the negotiating table.

That was seemingly not due to a lack of effort as Tottenham tried until the final days of the summer window to land Savinho, but uncharacteristically, Pep Guardiola’s men decided to keep the player despite his reported desire to leave.

Tottenham have not given up on Savinho just yet

A number of sources over recent weeks have claimed that Tottenham will try again to land Savinho in January, but Spurs received some bad news regarding the deal a few days ago.

Fabrizio Romano revealed that Man City are progressing in talks over a new long-term deal for Savinho.

However, Tottenham will have hope until the 21-year-old has signed on the dotted line, and Pete O’Rourke has now said that the Lilywhites have not abandoned their pursuit of the former Girona man just yet.

The journalist told Football Insider: “Spurs remain interested in Savinho. There’s no doubt about that. So they will continue to monitor the situation at the hand and his playing time.

“Look, as you mentioned there, he just made his first start of the season in that Carabao Cup win against Huddersfield [24 September] and he scored in that game as well.

“So he’ll be hoping that might be a springboard for him to maybe become a regular in Pep’s starting XI in the next few weeks as well. He’ll earn more minutes.

“But look, Man City were very fast in their desire to keep hold of Savinho in the summer. They rebuffed any interest from Tottenham saying that he wasn’t for sale and they put a huge price tag of around £65 million on his head to try and scare off Tottenham as well.”

Should Tottenham move on to other alternatives?

There have been some rumours that Tottenham have identified Sevilla’s Ruben Vargas as an alternative to Savinho.

Some Spurs fans have called on the club to splash the cash on Yankuba Minteh or Antonie Semenyo when the transfer window reopens in January.

However, we know that Thomas Frank is a huge fan of Savinho, and if the winger does not break into Man City’s starting eleven by January, one would expect Tottenham to test the waters again.
