Pressure is mounting on Thomas Frank but if Tottenham were hoping Xabi Alonso would be the one to step in and save them, they may have to think again.
Spurs are still without a league win in 2026 as we head for the end of January, and it sounds like Thomas Frank has exhausted all patience among the fans.
Whether the board are ready to call time on his tenure or not is another matter. However, Fabrizio Romano did say Frank is very much at risk of losing his job now.
A number of names have been mooted as potential replacements for Frank, but we now know a bit more about the likelihood of Xabi Alonso being the next Spurs boss.

Xabi Alonso may be reluctant to take over at Tottenham
Thanks to Spurs insider Paul O’Keefe, we are led to believe that the club has indeed sounded out Alonso as a candidate for the job if and when Frank moves on. However, the Spaniard may be reluctant to take the job.
O’Keefe claims Tottenham have inquired “through intermediaries to see if there would be any interest” on Alonso’s side for becoming the next Tottenham manager.
This is thought to have been a tentative approach thus far, but the response from Alonso’s camp has not been particularly positive.
The problem is, as O’Keefe says, Alonso will “have his pick of clubs” whenever he wants to take up another job. For Spurs, he states the idea of the Spaniard coming in is merely a “pipe dream.”
Taking the Liverpool job in the summer makes more sense for Alonso
Unfortunately for Tottenham, while it is thought Alonso is keen to get back into work as soon as possible after being sacked by Real Madrid, there may be one job in particular that will be at the top of his list.
Liverpool, Alonso’s former club, are running out of patience with Arne Slot, and there’s a chance the Dutchman could depart before the season is over.
Even if he had to wait until the summer for such an opportunity to arise, it’s hard to imagine Alonso not being prepared to play the patient game if it means he can return to Anfield as manager.
Alonso spent five years at Liverpool as a player and made 210 appearances for the Reds. If it was a straight pick between Liverpool and Spurs, you’d think it’s a no-brainer for Alonso, leaving Tottenham needing to look at other candidates to replace Thomas Frank.
