Huge Johnny Cardoso update suggests Tottenham may miss out

Following a big transfer development regarding Johnny Cardoso, a report from Spain has warned that Tottenham Hotspur may be at risk of missing out on the Real Betis man despite their option to buy the midfielder this summer.

Over the past few weeks, various Spanish publications have treated it as a foregone conclusion that Johnny Cardoso is on his way to Tottenham.

One can understand why that is the case, given that Spurs have a £21m option to buy the Cardoso this summer, and considering the form the midfielder has been in of late, that seems like a no-brainer for the North London club to activate.

However, a couple of days ago, a new report suggested that Cardoso may have a change of heart and remain at Betis, especially if the club manage to qualify for the Champions League.

Tottenham could miss out on Johnny Cardoso amidst ‘lucrative’ interest

A fresh report in Relevo has now said something very similar, stating that Tottenham’s purchase option does not guarantee that Cardoso will end up at N17 this summer.

The report points out that the midfielder has to greenlight a move to Spurs even if the clause is activated and suggests that the player might not do so.

This is because his entourage is handling ‘more lucrative interests’, which suggests that a number of top clubs have reached out to the player’s representatives regarding a summer transfer.

This poses a major problem to Tottenham, who might find it difficult to convince the 23-year-old to reject offers from top clubs in favour of a move to N17.

Real Betis are ready to offload Cardoso

It remains to be seen what other clubs enter the picture for the midfielder, but it is clear that his club will not stop him from leaving this summer.

In fact, over the last few weeks, sources from Spain have claimed that Betis would be happy for Tottenham to activate the option to buy Cardoso as the La Liga club needs to raise funds to offset their losses.

It remains to be seen if potential Champions League qualification will reduce the desperation of the Spanish side to offload their prized assets.
