Huge Tottenham blow as Johnny Cardoso may have a change of heart

Tottenham’s deal for Johnny Cardoso might not be as straightforward as the North London club would have hoped, with a new report suggesting that the midfielder is having a change of heart ahead of the summer window.

Spurs have a £21m option to buy Cardoso this summer and given how well the 23-year-old has performed in Real Betis’ midfield over recent months, the deal seems like a no-brainer for Tottenham Hotspur to activate.

In fact, reports from Spain over recent weeks have indicated that the expectation at Betis is that Cardoso will join Tottenham this summer.

However, it turns out that the player might be having a change of heart regarding his summer plans amidst the La Liga club’s impressive run of form of late.

Johnny Cardoso may be having a change of heart about Tottenham

A report in La Colina de Nervion now says that Cardoso’s move to Tottenham is far from a foregone conclusion.

The outlet says that there is a positive feeling at Betis about what they can achieve this season, with the club now looking to win the Europa Conference League and secure Champions League qualification via a top-four or top-five finish.

The outlet says that ‘everything has changed’ in recent weeks and that Cardoso might be tempted to remain at the Estadio Benito Villamarin if the club manage to get into the Champions League.

It is pointed out in the outlet that even though Tottenham can activate the option to buy the American, the player has to give the green light for the transfer to go through.

What Cardoso has said about his future

This is a particularly concerning update as it comes just a few days after the Betis midfielder made an interesting statement about his future.

When pressed on the possibility of a transfer in the summer, Cardoso made it clear that he is happy at Betis and that he sees himself staying at the club for many years.

It thus looks like Tottenham might have to look at other options, particularly if they fail to qualify for the Champions League via the Europa League.
