Hugo Lloris admits he sent difficult text to Harry Kane after penalty miss

Tottenham Hotspur skipper Hugo Lloris has revealed to the Evening Standard what he said to his club teammate Harry Kane after the latter missed a crucial penalty in the World Cup clash between France and England on Saturday evening.

Two of the most experienced Spurs stars came head-to-head in the World Cup quarter-final between France and England. While Hugo Lloris put in an impressive performance between the sticks, it was his opposing captain who stole the headlines, for the wrong reasons.

With both nations impressing in the early stages of the tournament, the clash came down to what Kane described as a “small detail,” and sadly his penalty miss in the 84th minute ended England’s hopes of progressing.

It was a painful moment for the England captain, who also said he would need “some time to get over it.”

For Lloris, it was a bittersweet moment. The joy of seeing his country through to the semi-finals was tarnished somewhat by the pain his good friend and Spurs teammate experienced in defeat.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Lloris detailed the text message conversation he shared with Kane after the game.

He said: “We had a text [exchange] after the game, but it was not easy to find the words straight after the game in the changing room. I think he needed some rest. It is a difficult time, obviously, for the English national team and for Harry, but I think he can be proud.”

Lloris tried to find the positives, adding: “He can be proud of what he has done for the national team during this World Cup. I think in football history, many top players missed penalties, important penalties, in their careers: players like Leo Messi, like Cristiano Ronaldo, like Kylian Mbappe.”

And, looking ahead to the future, Lloris insisted, “I have no doubt Harry will keep his chin up and help Tottenham and the national team to shine.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I can’t imagine how difficult and strange an experience it was for Hugo Lloris to not only face off against his close friend on Saturday, but to see his opponent go through such a devastating ordeal while he celebrates a huge success. I’m sure Lloris will be right there when Spurs get back underway, supporting Kane and helping him get back to his best.
