Hugo Lloris claims Spurs fans ‘deserve more’ – Opens up on lack of trophies

Hugo Lloris has admitted Tottenham fans ‘deserve more’ from the side and says he is ready to do all he can to bring silverware back to the club.

Lloris, 35, has entered his tenth season at Spurs and recently extended his stay in North London by signing a new two-year contract (Sky Sports) amidst concerns that he could depart as a free agent (ESPN).

The Spurs captain has been a reliable figure in the side throughout his stint in N17 and is edging closer to the mark of 400 appearances (Transfermarkt).

In that time, Lloris was part of an incredible journey to help Spurs reach the Champions League final in 2019 as well as League Cup finals in 2015 and 2021.

Although he did not manage to hoist the respective trophies on those occasions, the Frenchman has assured that he will continue pushing to deliver silverware and end the club’s 14-year drought.

Speaking to The Times, Lloris said: “They deserve more. I just want to give my best and give more. I know they’re waiting for a trophy.

“We had some great times at Spurs especially during the Mauricio Pochettino era when we were close, very close.

“When we had the team ready for competing for a trophy and we were at the perfect maturity, playing with each other for many, many years and we knew each other well, there was always a new challenge.”

Asked to elaborate his point on a challenge, he explained: “So, for example, we finished the last year at White Hart Lane in 2016-17, and finished second and unbeaten at home all this season.

“At that moment, when you feel the team is so close and ready to go again, we had to deal with a new challenge — Wembley. We didn’t have a home anymore, we have to wait for the new stadium for two years and we have to move to Wembley.

“The feeling was like, ‘OK, we play, even if you try to make Wembley your home, we play in a neutral place’ and it cost points. The most important is to learn from this period.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As one of the more senior and long-serving players in the squad, Lloris will understand more than anyone just how much silverware means to himself, the club and the fans. Tottenham have the infrastructure in place to do that, even with a slightly lacking squad, so hopefully, over the next couple of years, the drought can be ended.
