In a new interview with French outlet L’Equipe, Hugo Lloris has explained how his decision to retire from international football could prove beneficial for Tottenham Hotspur.

Lloris became his country’s most-capped player during the 2022 World Cup, after racking up 145 appearances for the French national team (Transfermarkt) since his debut in 2008.

The Tottenham Hotspur skipper has also been the French captain since 2011. He’s had an incredibly successful career at international level, lifting the World Cup in 2018 and winning the Nations League in 2021.

After helping Les Bleus to the World Cup final once again in Qatar, Lloris and his teammates were unable to bring the trophy home for a second successive time. France were beaten on penalties by Argentina in the final last month.

Since returning to club action with Spurs, Lloris has announced his retirement from international football (Julien Laurens), calling time on a fantastic career for his country.

In the interview with L’Equipe, Lloris has discussed the decision and how it could impact his Spurs career as a result as he chases silverware with the Lilywhites.

He said: “I want to continue to perform, to live this sport as I have always done, and maybe this decision will give me more freshness in the club, I don’t know. But I want to live these years to come to the fullest, and to the highest.

“In the next four or five months, with Tottenham, I want to finish in the top four of the Premier League, to do something strong in the Champions League, in the FA Cup too. I don’t want to stop, because I love football too much, and physically I feel good, which is the most important. I would like a trophy again.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We all know Hugo Lloris’ time at Tottenham Hotspur, at least as the number one goalkeeper, is running out. With a new goalkeeper potentially arriving in the summer, this second half of the season is huge for Lloris and hopefully with his entire focus on the mission with Spurs, he can achieve something amazing.
