Tottenham confirm first senior departure of January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the departure of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who has joined Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC.

The 38-year-old was in the final year of his Spurs contract and has not featured under new head coach Ange Postecoglou after the World Cup winner revealed back in June that he wanted to leave the North Londoners to seek a new challenge.

He told Nice-Matin: ‘We are coming to an important moment, whether for the club or for me. It’s the end of an era. I have desires for other things.”

Hugo Lloris completes Tottenham exit

Lloris missed the end of last season through injury, with his final appearance coming in Tottenham’s 6-1 defeat at Newcastle United in which he conceded five goals in 21 minutes and was replaced by Fraser Forster at half time.

Having started his career in France at Nice, Lloris joined Lyon in 2008 and then moved to Tottenham four years later and went on to make 444 appearances for Spurs across all competitions, keeping 151 clean sheets (transfermarket).

Lloris earned 145 caps for France, including captaining his country to World Cup glory in 2018 before his international retirement last year.

The veteran’s place between the posts was taken by Guglielmo Vicario, with the Italian having joined Tottenham earlier this summer from Empoli in a deal worth an initial £17.2m (Sky Sports).

SpursWeb Opinion

Hugo Lloris has been a brilliant servant for Tottenham and gave his prime years for the club even when we were playing Europa League football and the standard of his play deserved to be featuring in the Champions League, year after year.

Unfortunately, the game has evolved where a goalkeeper has to be very comfortable with the ball at his feet and Lloris is an analogue keeper in the digital age.
