Hugo Lloris reveals how Spurs will look to stop Lionel Messi

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris insists that his side are full of belief that they can get a result against Barcelona.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men go into the match knowing that if they can match Inter Milan’s result against PSV Eindhoven at the San Siro they will book their place in the next round of the Champions League. However, should they fail to do so, the Europa League beckons.

Lloris has been showing glimpses of some of his best form in the past week with a string of impressive saves against Southampton last Wednesday.

The Frenchman will need to be on top of his game should Barcelona decide to pick Lionel Messi for the encounter at the Nou Camp, with Lloris not only aware of the danger that the Argentine will pose, but also the rest of the Barcelona side.

It will take a combined team effort if Spurs are to inflict a first defeat on Barcelona’s home turf in the European competition in over five years.

Lloris told a press conference this afternoon as quoted by FourFourTwo: “You’re facing one of the best players in history,” Lloris said of Messi to reporters. “It will not be easy, but we will go out with 100 per cent belief that we can do it.

“It will be very tough to stop someone like Lionel Messi, but we will only do it as a team.

“If you watch the free-kicks [he scored against Espanyol on Saturday] there is nothing you can do. When they go in the top corner like the other night, he’s the type of player who can change the game and decide.

“It’s very difficult to face a player like him. The only way to do it is as a team, not give him too much space and be at our best defensively.”
