Report: Spurs player still wants exit despite meeting with Ange Postecoglou

Despite holding his first meeting with new head coach Ange Postecoglou, Hugo Lloris is still expected to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, according to the print edition of French newspaper L’Equipe (16/6/23).

The club captain has been a loyal servant and has produced many moments of brilliance to help his team out. However, the Frenchman has also made a number of costly errors, increasingly so in the last 12 months.

Despite having a year left on his current contract, speculation has suggested Lloris will be part of an exodus at Tottenham Hotspur this summer (Telegraph).

Lloris admitted earlier this month that he is ready to seek a new challenge away from the club as he enters the latter stages of his career.

He told (Nice-Matin): “We have reached an important moment, whether it be for the club or me. It’s the end of an era.

“I have a desire for something else. I will carefully study what is possible. However, I haven’t forgotten that I have a year left on my contract at Tottenham, and in football, it’s always hard to predict what will happen.”

Lloris still set to leave Spurs despite Postecoglou meeting

The report states Postecoglou is “looking to bring in a new number one” at the club, which leaves Lloris looking “more likely” to move on this year.

Postecoglou has now held a meeting with Lloris “to discuss his future at Tottenham” and it appears the answer is straightforward.

Lloris himself is still “undecided” about where he will be playing football next year, but it is expected any decision will be based on “personal reasons [rather] than professional ones.”

On this basis, it is believed a “move to the Middle East seems unlikely.” The Athletic reported earlier this week that the World Cup winner is considering turning down a big-money offer to play in Saudi Arabia next season.

Lloris has been at Tottenham since 2012 and has amassed 447 appearances for the North London side across all competitions (transfermarkt).

Tottenham have Brentford’s David Raya in their sights as Lloris’ replacement in N17 with the goalkeeper keen on the move, however, there is currently disagreement on the Bees £40million valuation of the Spaniard who just has a year to run on his existing contract.

Spurs Web Opinion

Hugo Lloris has done enough in his career now that he can bring it to a close in any way he chooses, and I suspect he will return to France and most likely a move to Nice for a year or two before retiring. He will certainly not be the number one at Spurs next year, and he deserves to play regular football in his final years.
