Hutton has doubts over whether Celtic player is ready for Spurs switch

Alan Hutton has expressed his doubts as to whether Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer is ready to make the step up to Tottenham, amidst reports linking him with a move to North London.

Norwegian news outlet Sporten claimed earlier in the week that the Lilywhites were preparing a move for Ajer in the summer as they look to bolster their defence.

The central defender joined the Glasgow giants from Norway side IK Start as a free agent in 2016 and has since gone on to establish himself as a regular in Neil Lennon’s side this season.

The 21-year-old insisted in January that he had no desire to leave Celtic Park (Daily Record) but his agent, Tore Pedersen has since confirmed that the youngster will leave the club in the summer (Scottish Sun).

Hutton expressed his doubts as to whether it was Ajer’s agent who was feeding transfer rumours to the press but did admit that Spurs needed reinforcements at the back.

When asked about Ajer’s rumoured move to Spurs, the former Tottenham defender told Football Insider: “Oof, that’s a massive step up. That’s a huge jump.

“I don’t know him personally, I don’t know him or his personality but what I do know is he’s been a solid player for Celtic.

“Whether, look, I always think when agents are talking too much, a lot comes from the agent, there’s a lot of chat put in the press to try and rustle something up.

“On the flip side, we know Tottenham’s problems and where they’re lacking. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re looking at a lot of options for the defensive side of it.”

With Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Japhet Tanganga all having their best years ahead of them, I would expect Jose to target an experienced left-sided centre-half to replace Jan Vertonghen in the summer. It is clear that Ajer simply doesn’t fit that profile and won’t be an improvement over what we have.
