‘I am a bit worried’ – Conte reacts to frustrating Skipp and Sessegnon injuries

Antonio Conte opened up on his frustrations surrounding injuries to Oliver Skipp and Ryan Sessegnon in today’s pre-match press conference.

Both players will be out of this weekend’s clash away to Manchester United, with both clubs vying for that final Champions League spot this season.

Skipp has been struggling with a groin problem for a couple of months, while Sessegnon picked up a muscle problem in the 5-0 win against Everton on Monday.

The midfielder had been a key feature of Conte’s new-look Tottenham, while Sessegnon was just coming into form at left-wing-back, assisting Spurs’ first goal against the Toffees.

The Tottenham head coach claimed he is worried about his lack of options in midfield, particularly when Skipp and Bentancur were both out, while it is frustrating to see Sessegnon cut down just as he was peaking.

With Spurs having just 12 matches left in their 2021/22 season, Conte will want to get all his key players back for the run-in.

He said (Football London): “For sure I am worried because he [Skipp] started with a groin pain and then we are talking about two months that he is out.

“I don’t have so many midfielders, there is Bentancur, Hojbjerg, Skipp and Winks, to miss for a lot of time is not simple and I have to hope not to have an injury for our midfielders. It happened, Bentancur had problems and we only had two midfielders.

“This is a problem, I am a bit worried, in my mind, in the mind of my players, there is the desire to come back very soon. In this moment, if you ask me for a forecast about his return, I don’t have an answer.

“For this reason, I am really worried, we are talking about a player who was playing very well and we need another midfielder.”

He added: “Yeah we’re talking about not a new problem [for Sessegnon]. We have to with the medical department find a solution.

“Sometimes though there is a predisposition to have this type of problem. He’s very strong physically and sometimes it’s good to be strong for your body sometimes it’s not when you’re too strong for your body.

“His performances were good, he was excellent and he was improving. He’s very frustrated. It’s very young to see a player like this frustrated by these injuries. It’s a pity. Also, we have to work with him in the human aspect.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

Tottenham need to get Sessegnon and Skipp back as soon as possible, or risk the squad running a little thin as we enter the final portion of the season. As things stand, Reguilon will have to play every game and there won’t be much of a rest for Bentancur/Hojbjerg/Winks either.
