‘I am just so proud’ – Hojbjerg vows that Spurs will honour Gian Piero

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg says that Gian Piero Ventrone’s message about overcoming physical limitations will always remain with him and his teammates, and he vowed that they will work harder than ever to honour the Italian’s principles.

Ventrone’s sudden and tragic passing has been hard for everyone at Spurs to come to terms with as the Italian was loved by the players and staff.

In the little over ten months that he spent at the club, the Tottenham fitness coach left an undeniable mark on the club, and the players are certainly benefiting from the fitness regime he instilled.

Hojbjerg explained how Ventrone made the squad realise they could go far beyond what they perceived to be their limits.

The Dane expressed his pride at being part of Tottenham and insisted that everyone at the club is now even more motivated to be successful in order to honour their friend.

Hojbjerg told Spurs’ matchday programme ahead of the clash against Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday (as relayed by Football.London): “The week and the moment has been very emotional.

“It’s devastating, it’s sad, it’s unfair – all the words you could use. Gian Piero was a great man for everyone, and we are immensely sad.

“When we did running drills, he would often say when everyone would be very tired, maybe on the limit, he would say ‘now the work starts’ or actually, in his words, ‘work starts now!’

“He would be right next to us while pushing us to the limit and motivating us. That showed a lot, that your limit is further than you first believe, than you first think and that is something the team has taken on board.

“I would like to add that l am very proud to share a dressing room with these players and men. l am just so proud, which makes me even more eager to be successful.

“We will honour Gian Piero’s work by trying to give our best every day and by continuing his work now and also for the future. I think that is the best way to honour him. And also, to his family, I send a lot of emotions and thoughts in this moment!”

As tragic and unfair as Ventrone’s passing is, events like this can certainly galvanise the squad and bring them together, which is what seems to have happened. The best way to honour the Italian’s memory is to remain true to his principles and achieve success on the pitch.
