‘I am not worried’ – Antonio Conte dismisses concern over 30-year-old’s form

Antonio Conte has insisted that he has no concerns about Son Heung-min’s form and backed the South Korean to be back among the goals sooner rather than later.

Son has not found the back of the net so far this season and has looked out of sorts in the first three games.

With new signing Richarlison impressing as a substitute in Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Chelsea and 1-0 win over Wolves, some Spurs fans on social media have suggested that the Brazilian deserves a start.

However, Conte has now insisted that he has been pleased with Son’s attitude and work rate in training and in the three matches.

When asked if the 30-year-old’s confidence has been affected by his form, the Italian told Football.London: “No. I’m seeing the same player that I knew in November when I arrived in Tottenham. A good guy who has a great commitment and a great attitude. But if we have seven points and you are complaining about Sonny and when he is good, I think we can do good things.

“We have to try to understand and decide you want to see the situation, you understand? For me, Sonny is playing a good game. He’s not scoring, but it can happen. It happened last season with Harry Kane. Now Harry has scored twice and we are happy. It’s the same for Sonny and for the other strikers.

“The most important thing is the team and that the team is going to win. I understand that personal achievements are important but the team, the club is more important than me, than everybody.”

Conte dismissed the notion that Son’s confidence would be affected by not scoring for three games, and accused the media of making a mountain out of a molehill.

He added: “Sonny is enjoying his football every day. To think he is enjoying it more or less just because of one goal, it is ridiculous. We are trying to create a problem when the problem is not there. I am not worried, and if anybody is going to be worried, it is going to be the coach. It’s you lot who are worried.

The Tottenham head coach insisted that the flood gates will open for the forward when he gets off the mark this season.

When pressed on if Son himself is worried about his individual performances, Conte responded: “He is working well and in my opinion, he is playing a good game. He has to continue to play that way. When he finds the goal, he is going to score and the situation will return to normal for everybody. But I am really surprised to be speaking about Sonny in a press conference.”

Son always has patches like this every season where he goes off the boil. However, we know that South Korean will reliably score plenty of goals when he hits a purple patch.

The only difference now is that we have a player of Richarlison’s quality on the bench but in my opinion, it is ridiculous to suggest that Son should be left out of the team after three matches.
