‘I am pretty blessed’ – Ange Postecoglou on what he did on the final whistle after beating Man Utd

Ange Postecoglou has admitted that he wanted to take a minute to absorb the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after seeing his side beat Manchester United 2-0 in his first Premier League fixture at home.

There was a major disconnect between the Spurs fans and the club prior to the arrival of Postecoglou from Scottish champions Celtic, however, he appears to be mending the disconnect at least with on-field matters with his attacking style of football and refreshing honesty when speaking to the media.

The atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium yesterday evening was electric even before kick-off, with the fans getting fully behind the team throughout the 90 minutes, which is not something that was often the case under the likes of Antonio Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho.

That perhaps has to do with the kind of messaging that Postecoglou has delivered so far and the kind of front-foot football that he is trying to implement.

The Australian could not have hoped for a better result in his first home game as his side played some eye-catching football and despite riding their luck at times, managed to secure all three points with a dominating second half display.

After the full-time whistle, Postecoglou took a moment to himself in the centre circle of the pitch, before making his way to applaud all four corners of the stadium and enjoyed a special moment in front of the south stand to encourage the supporters who were singing his name to sing it even louder, as shown in the below video.

Ange Postecoglou on why he appreciated win against Manchester United

When asked about what was going through his mind, the new Spurs head coach responded: “You want to feel that moment because I have always said, to me, I love what football does to people, particularly in those moments.

“So, you kind of take a moment to think about the 60,000 here or the ones who were watching at home because they will be smiling for the rest of the week. I love that it does that the game.

“For me that moment is just about appreciating I am pretty blessed to be doing what I am doing, being in the middle of a stadium leading a fantastic football club and then you start to think about next week, mate.”

Spurs Web Opinion

As Spurs fans know only too well, top football managers are often egotistical and even narcissistic. One can argue that they need to be to survive and have success in such a ruthless industry.

So, it makes a refreshing change to have someone like Postecoglou in charge. The 57-year-old is evidently a thoroughly decent bloke who seems to prioritise giving joy to the supporters rather than just saying things that are self-serving.
