“I am Tanguy, not new Essien or Pogba” – Midfielder determined to build his own path with Spurs

A lot of superlatives have been used to describe Tottenham’s record signing Tanguy Ndombele from both the British and the French press.

The 22-year-old is considered by many experts to be a complete box to box midfielder, capable of winning the ball back and snuffing out attacks, while also being able to run past players and pick out passes.

Therefore, there have been many comparisons made to the likes of Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien and Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba.

However, Ndombele resisted comparisons with those players and insisted that he wants to work at his own game and fulfill his potential.

Speaking to L’Équipe, the French international said, “I Want to be myself. I want to become the person I am supposed to become.

“I am here to work, I am 22, I am not at my maximum I don’t think, I hope in any case.”

When asked about comparisons with his international team mate, Paul Poba, Ndombele said, “I have heard it all. I am here to make my own path. Paul has made his own in England.

“I am Tanguy, not the new Essien, not the new Pogba.”

Ndombele was also confident that he had a skill set that was different to the other players in the Spurs squad and that he can be a vital cog in the wheel for the side next season.

He added, “I think that I have quite different qualities to the others. Admittedly, I am joining a squad that is already quite solidified.

“I want to bring my block to the building. When you are a Champions’ League finalist, the aim has to be the next time too as a minimum repeat that feat.

“Nobody has talked to me about it (there) but as I am a competitor, I think that the club wants to win the Champions’ League.”

Ndombele certainly seems to have the hunger and the drive to prove himself next season. He is competing with the likes of Paul Pogba and Ngolo Kanta for a place in the French national time, and this move will give him the perfect platform to shine.
