‘I apologise’ – Cristian Romero on controlling his aggression on the pitch

Cristian Romero has hailed the impact that Richarlison has made at Tottenham, stating that the forward gives ‘absolutely everything’ every time he is on the pitch. The centre-back also opened up on his own fiery streak. 

Romero, like Richarlison, is a fighter, who never tends to shy away from a battle. In fact, the pair have had a few altercations on the pitch for both club and country over the past couple of years. 

Now that they have been united in North London, the centre-back has waxed lyrical about the former Everton man, admitting that he offers something different compared to Tottenham’s other forwards.

Romero told Sky Sports about Richarlison: “He has brought a lot to the team. He is a player who is a little bit different to the ones we already had. He is a player who puts in absolutely everything, all the time.

“We have Harry Kane, who, for me, is a maximum talent and one of the best strikers in the world.

“We also have [Heung-Min] Son and [Dejan] Kulusevski, who also make the difference. But Richy is giving us different things and that’s something which I think is infectious.”

Romero has quickly become known for his fiery streak, with the centre-back being involved in some controversial moments since his move to Tottenham.

One incident which hit the headlines earlier this season was the Argentine pulling the hair of Marc Cucurella during Tottenham’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

The Tottenham man revealed that he apologises to opponents if he does cross the line during a game and admitted that he is learning to control his aggression.

When asked about his fiery streak, Romero said: “It really depends on the game. I always try to give opponents maximum respect. If something happens which isn’t good, I always reflect on it and I apologise.

“This season, I think I’m doing better in that sense. I know it’s something I have to improve, but I have only had one yellow card in the games I’ve played so far this year.”

When informed that Tottenham fans love his aggression and competitiveness, the 24-year-old responded: “I am always grateful for the support they give me.”
