‘I can count on him’ – Conte confirms Spurs midfielder will not leave in January

Antonio Conte has completely ruled out any prospect of Harry Winks leaving Tottenham in the January transfer window.

Before the Italian arrived in North London, Winks had found it hard to earn consistent game time under both Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo.

Winks has already started three Premier League games under Conte and impressed in all three outings, most recently against Southampton when he showcased some superb long-range passing.

Previous reports had indicated that Winks wanted to move away from Tottenham in January in order to kickstart his career. After all, it wasn’t long ago that he was a regular not only in the Spurs starting XI, but also Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

However, Conte has now assured fans that Winks will stay beyond the transfer window, insisting he can count on the midfielder.

He added that he has been using his two months in charge of Spurs to find out who is reliable, with Winks falling firmly within that category.

He said (Football London): “Winksy is playing well. Winsky showed to be a reliable player. For this reason, Winks will stay here. I’m finding out which players are reliable and I can count on them. Winksy showed me I can count on him.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

There may be some moans and groans about this, but you have to trust Conte to pick who he wants. Sometimes, a mixture of a new manager and new formation can pull a player back from the brink. Hopefully, we will see that here.
