“I can imagine he’s impatient” – Vertonghen on Pochettino

Jan Vertonghen believes that his former boss Mauricio Pochettino will wait for a big job in the Premier League to become available as English football suits his style.

The Argentine has been out of work since parting company with Spurs almost a year ago.

He has recently been linked with both the Manchester United and Manchester City hotseats with The Daily Mirror reporting that the United and City hierarchy have earmarked him as the man to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Pep Guardiola respectively.

El Transistor (via The Sun) even claimed last Saturday that Real Madrid are eyeing the former Spurs boss as a possible replacement for Zinedine Zidane.

However, Vertonghen is confident that the 48-year-old will want to remain in England and suggested that he will be impatient to get back to work.

Speaking to CBS Soccer’s Que Golazo podcast (as relayed by Football.London), the Belgian international, who worked with Pochettino for five and a half years in North London, said: “I can imagine he’s impatient.

“I think the English league suits him very well as he’s a manager that prioritises fitness levels and the physicality of the game.

“I think managing in the Premier League is probably the best thing he can do. He will always want to coach a big team I guess, so you have to look at the biggest teams in the league and there are only two or three you can really look at I think at this point.

“I won’t name them out of respect for the other managers, but I think that’s what he’s looking at as well and he wants that big team to confirm him what he’s been doing with Tottenham and what he did very well.

“If I was him I would be impatient because he really loved his job and you want to continue that.”
