‘I don’t think that’s fair’ – Postecoglou leaps to Harry Kane’s defence amid trophy claim

Ange Postecoglou has rejected the idea that Harry Kane’s decision to leave Tottenham would be deemed a failure if the striker does not win a trophy with Bayern Munich this season.

While Kane had won several individual honours at Spurs and broken a whole host of goalscoring records at the club, pundits and opposition fans kept reminding the striker of the fact that he had not managed to win any trophies.

When the 30-year-old made the switch to Bayern last summer, it seemed like that record was about to end, with the England captain looking certain to get his hands on a league winner’s medal.

However, the Bavarian side have inexplicably failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time in 2012, which means that there is now a very real chance that the England captain would still be waiting for his first piece of silverware by the end of this season.

Harry Kane left Spurs for more than trophies

Postecoglou has now come to the former Tottenham man’s defence, insisting that trophies are not the only reason why he wanted to join Bayern.

When asked if Kane’s decision to leave his Spurs project could be deemed unsuccessful without silverware this season, the Australian told The Evening Standard: “No, I don’t think that’s fair. I’m not going to speak for Harry, for God’s sake.

“But I don’t think that’s the only reason he left. I think he was pretty clear that he wanted a different experience and I think there’s nothing wrong with that.

“That’s been my whole career. He was at one club for a very long time. He was at a point where he either makes a decision to stay and become a one-club man, which is fair enough, or he can experience something different as a footballer, maybe as a person.

“I don’t know. These are questions for him. But I don’t get this notion that he just moved just to win things. I don’t think if he had stayed here he didn’t think he was going to win things. I just think he wanted a different experience and he’s getting that.

“I’m sure at the end of his career, if that was his reasoning behind it, he’ll find that it does. It gives you a real broad experience about what football is about, what life is about. I don’t think that’s fair on him.

“Ultimately all these decisions you make about your personal career… I know every decision I’ve made in my career, it’s very hard for other people sometimes to understand because they’re not living my life. They’re not with my family or with the people around me to know why you come to these decisions.”

There is no doubt that Kane will have a few trophies to his name by the time he leaves Bayern. One can hardly point to him as the reason for the club’s inability to win the Bundesliga this season, given the outstanding numbers that the former Spurs man has posted so far.
