‘I don’t understand’ – Serie A club director breaks silence on Spurs-linked centre-back

Inter Milan director Piero Ausilio has insisted that he is not worried about the speculation regarding the future of rumoured Tottenham target Stefan de Vrij.

Following Antonio Conte’s appointment at Spurs, the Italian has been backed to raid his former club for several of their players, with the likes of De Vrij, Marcelo Brozovic, and Nicolo Barella being mooted as potential January targets for the Lilywhites.

De Vrij has been the most heavily linked out of the aforementioned players, with Conte alleged to have asked Spurs to make the Netherlands international the club’s top transfer target in January.

Football Insider reported last month that the 29-year-old is interested in the prospect of reuniting with Conte at Tottenham and has asked his friends in England about the North London club.

According to sources, the central defender’s agent Mino Raiola has reached out to Spurs, Newcastle and Everton over a potential January transfer.

However, Ausilio has insisted that De Vrij’s future is not a matter of concern for the Nerrazuri since the defender still has 18 months left on his contract.

The Inter director told Sky Italia (as relayed by Calciomercato): “Renewals? We have concluded three important agreements with (Alessandro) Bastoni, Lautaro (Martinez) and (Nicolo) Barella.

“Now we are talking with Brozovic. Soon we will also do it with Perisic and (Samir) Handanovic.

“(Federico) Dimarco on the home straight? Not yet, but we are discussing and both sides have expressed their willingness to continue together.

“De Vrij? I don’t understand why we talk about him so much. He still has a year and a half on his contract.”

Eric Dier has done exceedingly well in the central sweeper role in Conte’s back three so far but if Rodon is to leave in January, we would need cover/competition for Dier.

De Vrij will be a natural fit as he understands the tactical demands of the position, having worked with Conte for two years.

However, his age might put off Spurs as Partici has targetted relatively young and upcoming players in his tenure so far.
