‘I don’t understand the links’ – Alasdair Gold rules out Spurs signing one player in January

Alasdair Gold has rubbished suggestions that Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Kalvin Phillips, insisting that the Manchester City star does not fit the profile of midfielder that Ange Postecoglou’s men are after.

It has been widely reported over the last week that next on the agenda for Spurs after strengthening at centre-back and in attack is to sign a number eight, with Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher continuing to be heavily linked with a move across London (Independent).

However, over recent days, some outlets have played down the chances of the Lilywhites winning the race for the Gallagher, pointing out that the England international is desperate to remain at Stamford Bridge and fight for his place (The Sun).

Meanwhile, the speculation linking Phillips with a move to Spurs has not completely dissipated, with Newcastle Chronicle reporting recently that Postecoglou’s men have asked to be ‘kept in the loop’ about the 28-year-old’s availability.

Kalvin Phillips will not be joining Tottenham, says Gold

However, Gold has now revealed that his sources at Tottenham have rubbished those suggestions, with the journalist also pointing out that the City star would not get regular starts in North London.

Gold said on his YouTube channel: “Kalvin Phillips, from what I understand that’s not a move Spurs are looking to make at this moment in time. Phillips is very much a number six as well which is why I don’t understand the links to him.

“They have so many players who can play the number six role. If I’m Phillips why would I want to leave the bench at Man City for the bench at Spurs? That’s of no benefit to him. Yeah, from what I understand, speaking to a fair few people within Spurs, that’s not a player they’re looking at.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is quite clear that Spurs need more of a number eight than a six, which is why the links to the likes of Gallagher, Morgan Gibbs-White and Arthur Vermeeren make much more sense than the speculation over Phillips.
