‘I hate to say it’ – Former Spurs star gives honest prediction on PL top four race

Former Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel believes Arsenal will end up winning the race to secure a top-four spot this season.

The final Champions League place is there for the taking with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea leaving the rest of the challenging sides behind.

As many as five teams are battling it out to qualify for Europe’s elite competition, but it is Manchester United who hold the position for now.

Ralf Rangnick’s side sit four points ahead of West Ham and Arsenal respectively, but the Gunners boast three games in hand over the Red Devils.

Wolves occupy seventh-place having played two games fewer than United, while Tottenham are seven points off fourth but with three games in hand.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Friedel, who turned out on 67 occasions for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt), put his loyalties aside to suggest rivals Arsenal would claim the final Champions League spot.

Asked for his view on the top four race, Friedel told bet365 (via The Sun): “This is a hard question!

“Man United are now in there again, so it’s incredibly difficult to back one as it could go to three or four teams.

“I hate to say it, but I’m going to have to go with Arsenal even though I really want it to be Tottenham.”

Numerically, Arsenal do have the advantage over the competing sides. But as we saw over the last couple of weeks, games in hand do not necessarily matter unless they are taken advantage of. There will be plenty more twists and turns in this race as the rest of the season unfolds.
