‘I have a good relationship with him’ – Sessegnon on working with Conte

Ryan Sessegnon has admitted that he thought he was going to be taken off just before he scored against Bournemouth on Saturday.

Tottenham showed tremendous character at the Vitality Stadium to come back from two goals down to win the game.  The Lilywhites certainly deserved all three points, given how much they dominated proceedings in the second half and the chances that they created.

It was Sessegnon who started Spurs’ comeback with his strike in the 57th minute, with the left wing-back strike finding the far corner after his run into the box was picked out by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with a nicely weighted through ball.

However, just before the England Under-21 international found the back of the net, Ivan Perisic was waiting on the touchline to come on.

The Croat ended up coming on for Emerson Royal, with Sessegnon being shifted to right wing-back but the former Fulham man admitted that he thought he was going to be replaced.

When asked if he thought he was going to be taken off for Perisic, Sessegnon told BBC (17:18 29/10/22): “I had a little feeling as I looked over and saw him getting ready to come on but it is just one of them things.

“I had to make sure to leave my mark just before and thankfully I stayed on for a little bit longer. I have a good relationship with him [Conte] and I just try to be as consistent as I can for him.”

If it was Emerson who Conte was planning on taking off, he could well have bought on Matt Doherty or even Bryan Gil, potentially pushing Moura to right wing-back. The fact that he wanted to bring Perisic on, suggests that he was planning on taking off Sessegnon but changed his mind once the 22-year-old scored.
