‘I have got to say’ – Ex-Arsenal player Emiliano Martinez makes honest Spurs admission

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has admitted that the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is his favourite away ground in the Premier League.

Tottenham’s new home stadium has been in operation for almost three years but the 2021/22 campaign is set to be the club’s first full season with a capacity crowd at the venue, due to the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Martinez spent ten years at Arsenal after joining the club as a youngster, and the goalkeeper featured for the Gunners in their 2-1 North London derby loss at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in July 2020, a match that was played behind closed doors.

The Argentina international has featured twice for Aston Villa at Tottenham’s home ground since his move to Villa Park in the summer of 2020.

The Cope America winner admitted that playing at Tottenham’s home ground is a special experience, likening it to playing in a cup final.

When asked what his favourite away ground was, Martinez told Ben Foster’s The Cycling GK YouTube channel: “I have got to say Spurs away. More than a stadium. It looks like you are playing NFL.

“You go away there and it’s massive dressing rooms. It’s like you are playing in a final. It’s proper.”

Having a stadium like the one we now have, should be a source of pride for the fans. However, as we have seen already, visiting teams who come to the 62,850-capacity will likely be much more motivated to raise their games than they were at a venue like White Hart Lane.
