‘I have no idea’ – Dejan Kulusevski can’t understand worrying Spurs pattern

Dejan Kulusevski has told the Evening Standard he cannot understand why Tottenham Hotspur keep conceding the first goal in their games this season and insists his side must find a solution to this problem sooner rather than later.

Tottenham’s latest, and perhaps most crushing defeat came at the hands of local rivals Arsenal on Sunday evening. Losing 2-0 to the Gunners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium not only put Arsenal eight points clear at the top of the league, but leaves Spurs trailing behind the top four.

The game continued a worrying pattern for Tottenham this season, which has seen the Lilywhites concede the first goal on multiple occasions. Until the win over Portsmouth in the FA Cup, Spurs had actually conceded first in nine consecutive games.

Wins over Portsmouth and Crystal Palace appeared to put Spurs back on track, but the defeat to Arsenal saw the North London side revert to the frustrating trend of starting games poorly. For Kulusevski, this is a source of mystery and great concern.

He said: “I have no idea [why we keep conceding first], honestly. What I see is that when we score first we win the games and when we don’t, it’s much less [likely]. It’s very hard for everybody but if we don’t start the games better we’re not going to win. So we have to stop doing that.

“We’re trying. Nobody wants to concede first but everyone is trying. To find a solution is a little bit harder. Asking questions is very easy. Of course, the coach is on us.”

I’m completely at a loss as to why this keeps happening to Spurs, too, to be honest. It has been so damaging to our season, and I feel it all stems from a lack of urgency throughout the team, which piles pressure on the defence. If we don’t sort this out soon, the season will be a total disaster.
