‘I have to be honest’ – Conte claims Spurs ‘exploited’ situation against Brentford

Antonio Conte has admitted that Tottenham were able to exploit the few extra days of training they had ahead of the Brentford clash following the postponement of the match against Burnley.

Tottenham’s clash at Turf Moor on Sunday was called off less than an hour before kick-off due to heavy snowfall.

Reports revealed that the Spurs squad travelled straight back to London and into Hotspur Way after the postponement was confirmed on Sunday, with Conte and his coaching staff putting them through their paces.

The postponement meant the North Londoners ended up having a full week to prepare for the Brentford clash following their 2-1 loss to NS Mura last Thursday.

The Spurs head coach admitted that while he was disappointed the game did not go ahead on Sunday, the extra days of training certainly benefited the side ahead of the clash against the Bees, which his side won comfortably.

When asked about the postponement, Conte told Football.London: “I think that not playing against Burnley, we were disappointed because we wanted to play but the Premier League made the best decision to save the players and for the fans.

“But in the other hand, to have the possibility to have a training session was important, because we worked together. We worked on the physical aspect and tactical aspect and it was very, very important for us.

“I have to be honest to tell you that we exploited this situation. Every single moment we have, we have to exploit and try to improve and try to bring my philosophy into the mind of all my players.”

Conte said that his side are a potent attacking threat when the opposition gives them space but admitted the players need to find better solutions when space is not afforded to them.

When asked about Tottenham’s move for their second goal against Brentford, he responded: “I think that we have to be good in both situations.

“When we have space, in this case, I think this team is very good because in front we have players with quality but at the same time, fast players. Very good at exploiting the space.

“At the other end, we have to try to improve when we don’t find the space to move the ball better, to find the right solution, because during the training session, we’ll have a session to find the right solution in both situations.

“With space and without space, this team has the characteristics to exploit this situation. Without space, we have to improve, but for the second goal our players showed great quality and Harry made a fantastic play to send Sergio and then Sergio made a fantastic ball for Son.”

Given that Conte and his coaching staff have not had a pre-season to work with the squad, they will have to take advantage of every single day on the training field to get the players up to scratch with the demands of the system.

The postponement against Burnley has seemingly ended up as a blessing in disguise, particularly considering that Conte does not have a single free week until the end of December due to the congested fixture list.
