‘I have to be proud’ – Conte claims the mentality of his Spurs players is improving

Antonio Conte has claimed that the mentality of his Tottenham players is improving, and he is proud of the way they competed against Liverpool last night.

Despite Liverpool having played a huge game in mid-week, Spurs went into the match at Anfield as clear underdogs, such is the dominance the Reds often show at home.

However, the Lilywhites went toe to toe with their Premier League counterparts, defending resolutely against everything Jurgen Klopp’s men could throw at them.

While Heung-min Son put Tottenham 1-0 up after some superb build-up play from Antonio Conte’s side, Liverpool eventually equalised through a deflected Luis Diaz shot.

The Reds knocked on the door for the remaining 10 minutes, while Spurs had one last-gasp chance at the end to retake the lead through Hojbjerg, but the midfielder’s header failed to find Kane at the back post.

Despite only walking away from Anfield with a point when the performance arguably deserved more, Conte insisted he was proud of his players and how they implemented exactly what he asked of them.

When asked if the performance in that kind of atmosphere shows an improvement in mentality, Conte said (Football London): “Yeah, for sure I have to be proud of my players because as I said before to play with this atmosphere, a lot of noise around you, and with fans who are very excited for the result of Liverpool, and it wasn’t easy.

“Instead, I think that we have never lost the composure, the calm to face difficult moments. I think we didn’t concede great chances to Liverpool to score.

“At the same time I asked my players to be brave with the ball. I know it’s not easy because Liverpool want to put a lot of pressure, to be a problem to you, but I think we prepared the game very well and when we were able to overcome the pressure we created chances we could exploit much better.”

Spurs Web Opinion:

I think Spurs fans everywhere will also be proud of that performance. Tottenham have shown they can beat the big sides with this breakaway style. Now they just need to improve their consistency against less expansive teams.
