“I just worry about him at Tottenham” – Pundit sounds warning over summer signing

Former Republic of Ireland international David Connolly has admitted that he is worried about how things are going for Matt Doherty at Tottenham and suggested that the right-back is not suited to working with a personality like Jose Mourinho.

Doherty has not had the expected impact since arriving at North London in the summer, with Serge Aurier managing to hold on his place in the side more often than not.

When the former Wolves man has been handed opportunities, he has failed to make the most of them.

The 29-year-old was one of a number of Tottenham players who were well below par in the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Thursday and Connolly claimed that he does not suit the way Spurs play.

The pundit told RTE: “For one of the goals, Mourinho was screaming at Doherty. You could see his body language.

“I just can’t see it working out for him at Tottenham. They played with wing-backs (against Liverpool) but Doherty was on the left.

“Whenever I’ve watched him for Tottenham, and obviously I want him to do well because I want him to perform well for Ireland, I really don’t think he suits them.

“I don’t know if Mourinho suits him as a personality either. I just worry about him at Tottenham. I don’t think he’s suited there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Doherty has not had the impact most of us would have hoped for but I do feel that some of the criticism he has received is unfair. The 29-year-old has not been given a run of games as a right-wing-back in a back five, which has always been his best position. I would not write him off as a failure just yet.
